With its numerous rock-hewn chambers—some large and square, others narrow, intricate, and spanning multiple levels—the physical layout of Mitzpe Shivta has long been difficult to comprehend. The interplay between these carved spaces and the built architecture often remains enigmatic.
During a small field campaign in March, in collaboration with Enso (https://www.ensogeospatial.com), we took a significant step toward unraveling these mysteries. By employing laser scanning, drones, and LiDAR technology, we will soon be able to present the first-ever comprehensive plans and models of the site. For the first time, we can visualize the underground spaces alongside the structures above them—an incredible breakthrough.
Enso’s work will also play a crucial role in preparing for our upcoming excavation campaign in the fall. With excitement and curiosity, we look forward to the discoveries that await us!
